Your Store Wizards is here to help if you have questions about Yahoo's adaptive mobile offering. Please look through the questions below and click each question to see the answer. We will update this page periodically so you can have a quick reference guide.
Q: I have a custom design, will it change my site?
A: No, Yahoo!'s new mobile template is a completely separate template and design. It includes new properties and variables to control it, but it doesn't change the existing site.
Q: Do I have to set up a subdomain for the new mobile offering?
A: No, Yahoo!'s mobile offering is adaptive/dynamic serving. What this means is the same domain serves both pages (desktop/tablet and mobile). So the server that is hosting the pages determines if the user is coming from a mobile phone and serves either the desktop/tablet site, or the new mobile site. So you don't have to set up anything in regards to domains and urls.
Q: If I already have a mobile site, or a responsive site, what do I have to do?
A: You should turn off the new offering. Just go into your store manager and click on the Mobile Storefront link under the edit column and there you can disable the new offering.
Q: I have the new mobile storefront enabled. Will it just be live immediately?
A: No, once enabled you will still need to publish your site once for those pages to be generated.
Q: Can I customize the design of the mobile store front?
Q: Can the template be customized beyond what is "out of the box" offered?
A: Yes, it can. The template is completely rtml driven and so you, or any developer, can modify and customize the template to do whatever is needed.
Q: Can my mobile site be responsive?
A: It could be, but wouldn't really make sense because it's only served to mobile devices. If you want a responsive site, we'd recommend basically planning on redesigning your entire site and once ready, turning off the Yahoo! Mobile Site.
Q: Will this mobile site work on tablets?
A: No, this only is served to mobile devices (phones).
Q: Will this make my site "mobile friendly" for Google's mobile update?
A: Yes, this will qualify and pass Google's mobile friendly rating.
Q: Does this new mobile offering change checkout?
A: Currently this does not impact checkout. Long term they are working on plans, but if you need something now, developers can help customize your checkout to make it responsive so it will work with the mobile site.
Q: If I have a mobile site from Yahoo! do I need a responsive site?
A: Yahoo! is doing a great job offering a quick solution to help the mobile concerns of stores. But, a well designed and built responsive site, offers many advantages over a mobile site (separate or dynamically served). The biggest gain on a responsive site is the ability to target all devices for the best experience on any size device (desktop, tablet, mobile and all the devices in between) and in any orientation (portrait or landscape). Responsive can also handle any future size devices in between. It also has the benefit, when designed responsive from the start, of being able to build different experiences based on the device so you can target what's important to users on the different devices. Users on a cell phone may have different needs or immediate interest than users on a desktop computer, and that's an important distinction.
Q: What should I do to get any tracking added to my mobile pages?
A: Add your tracking codes to the mobile-head-tags and/or mobile-scripts-bottom variables. These work in your mobile site since your mobile doesn't automatically copy anything from your desktop pages. If the code needs to change on every page, such as adding product ids or prices, then it would take custom programming.
